<br />
My first impression, from the carpark, was that spring had not yet sprung but I was wrong. The dunes were looking pretty good because quite a few plants are flowering or in bud, and the estuary and the ocean looked splendid on a sunny and warm winter day.<br />

The library holds about 3000 colour transparencies made by Peter Dombrovskis and at the moment they are exhibiting 70 of them.<br />
<br />
You may not recognise the name but you will probably recognise this photo taken by Dombrovskis. It was used by the Wilderness Society in their campaign to prevent the damming of the Franklin and Gordon Rivers in Tasmania in the 1980s. It was a very successful example of political propaganda and probably swung the 1983 Federal election to a victory for Bob Hawke and the Labor Party.<br />

Dombrovskis walked the remote Tasmanian wilderness alone and carried heavy photographic equipment as well as supplies and camping equipment. The results are outstanding and if you get a chance go see the exhibition for yourself. You have until 30 January. Or buy the associated book called <i>Journeys into the Wild: The photography of Peter Dombrovskis, with an introduction by Bob Brown.</i>Boobookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01395043246338753023noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9136691209248233009.post-45733853222500814722017-10-30T02:11:00.000-07:002017-10-30T02:11:09.909-07:00War Memorial, CanberraIn Canberra yesterday we shared a table with two strangers, and got chatting as you do. It turns out that both have lived in Canberra for decades, and agreed with us that it is a fantastic city. And then added "except that there are too many public servants".<br />
<br />
We shared with them some of the amazing places we had visited in the past few days, including the War Memorial. To our astonishment they said they'd never been there!<br />

At the memorial we looked at a lot of the amazing displays, found the names of relatives on the wall because they died in service, looked at the special exhibitions and looked at a sound and light show. Had lunch in the Landing Place Cafe.<br />
<br />
I was moved by a simple item in the display about Australian prisoners of war in Europe in WW2. It is a page of mounted pressed flowers that Private AJ Stone picked while marching as a prisoner of war in Greece and Austria.<br />

It's common name is Soft Millotia and, yes, it looks soft and is soft to the touch.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Soft Millotia in its entirety.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Soft Millotia only grows to about 10 cm at most, flowers late winter and early spring and has pale yellow flowers and grey foliage so it can be easily overlooked amongst the other annual forbs and grasses. I've found it growing at Inverleigh, the Brisbane Ranges and at Anglesea. Sometimes it is prolific but still hardly noticeable.<br />
<br />
All of the Millotia species are endemic - they only grow in Australia. It is in the Asteraceae family named after a French historian named Millot for reasons unknown (to me). <i>Tenuifolia</i> means 'thin leaves' (Latin: tenuis + folium).<br />

From a distance the <i>Millotia tenuifolia</i> plants can look very grey, mainly because they are covered in white or pale golden woolly hairs that are glandular. I often see grains of sand caught on the hairs. The linear leaves are crowded at the base and then arranged alternately up the stem. The flower heads (about 10-40 flowers in each) are at the end of the stem.<br />

<br /></div>
<div>
There's a little plant called <i>Schoenus apogon.</i> (At the moment that is. It's had other botanical names since it was first described in the early 1800s.) <u>Schoenus</u> comes from the Greek word for reed or rush and <u>apogon</u> means 'without a beard'. (I still don't know where the beard would be if it had one.)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A search of various pronunciation sites on the web revealed that Schoenus is pronounced 'shernus' or 'skinus' or 'shonus'. So I'm going to keep calling it shonus unless Neville Walsh* tells me his version.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And the common names are confusing as well. It's called Common Bog-rush here in Victoria, but also Common Bog Rush, Fluke Bog-rush, Bog Club-rush and, because it also grows in New Zealand and Japan, who knows what else. That's why we use the scientific name. It's standard across the world. (Did you see how I used the word 'we' there? I'm a citizen scientist.)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>Schoenus apogon</i>, habit</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
If you want to see the Common Bog-rush flowering you need to get out there now (spring and summer) and look for a very small rush growing in a seasonally damp area. It's common so you have a good chance of finding some but they're easily overlooked and you've probably walked on one heaps of times because it looks like grass. Compare the size of the gum leaves in the photo above. It's an annual so that means it grows from seed each year.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The culms are terete and striated. To you and me that means the stems or stalks are circular (in cross-section) and striped or streaked. The sheaths around the flowering spikelets are dark red-brown and quite attractive really when you get down low to have a good look. The sheaths are shiny with glabrous margins. (That means they're smooth and free from hair so maybe that's the 'apogon' cleanshaven aspect.)</div>
<div>

At this time of the year the Wax-lip Orchids are ubiquitous, seemingly flowering everywhere in the bush. I found this little group in the Brisbane Ranges today but they were scattered throughout the understory. After the first few minutes of delight I tend to ignore them because I'm looking for other plants or insects. I hardly ever photograph them but this is one I took several weeks ago.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Darlot Creek, Homerton in September 2017</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
For over a decade I've been taking photographs from a bridge over Darlot Creek in Homerton, Victoria.<br />
<br />
I've posted blogs several times <a href="https://boobook48.blogspot.com.au/2007/11/feeling-blue-about-blue-gums.html">here </a>and <a href="https://boobook48.blogspot.com.au/2015/10/weed-willows-please.html">here</a> and <a href="https://boobook48.blogspot.com.au/2011/10/darlot-creek-photopoint.html">here</a>.<br />
<br />
It's been a very interesting project. The creek is never the same and has changed quite a bit over just that short period of time. It has never dried up because there are springs and swamps upstream, and it supports a suite of plants and animals that has interested scientists from time to time. And it has huge cultural connections to the local Gunditjmara people who call the creek Killara.<br />
<br />
The photo, below, was taken ten years ago just after the bluegum plantation was established on what had previously been a paddock. Stock were able to graze right into the creek. Willows were a problem then and continue to be in this section of the creek. In a big Victorian Government study of the Glenelg-Hopkins catchments this was the finding:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>Invasive willows
were not a significant problem with the exception of reaches
38 and 39 on the Merri River in the Hopkins basin and reach
9 on Darlot Creek in the Portland basin where a number of
willows were recorded. #</i></blockquote>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Darlot Creek, January 2007</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-size: x-small;">The next ten or twenty years will interesting because, at least in this section of the creek, the bluegum plantations mean that stock are not grazing along the west banks. The east side is not such an issue because it is part of an old rocky lava flow from Mount Eccles (Budj Bim).</span><br />

I have been photographing this ephemeral swamp at Homerton for over ten years. My intention is to monitor changes after the paddock, that was previously grazed by cattle, was planted with bluegums.<br />
<br />
At the moment is is full of water because it's been a wet winter and spring in western Victoria. This photo was taken in the summer of 2006 when it was a lot drier . I have previously blogged about changes in this swamp <a href="https://boobook48.blogspot.com.au/2014/01/photopoint.html">here</a>.<br />

The plantation is probably about due for its first harvest and then the bluegum trees will be allowed to regrow from the stumps for the next harvest in another ten years. I'm hoping that the reeds and rushes, as well as possibly trees like Blackwoods, Black Wattles and Swamp Gums, will grow around the swamp because they grow in another swamp less than 100 metres away but that's not happening yet.Boobookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01395043246338753023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9136691209248233009.post-84883639712643945652017-09-29T17:48:00.001-07:002017-09-29T17:48:19.296-07:00Hands up for the Woolly Teatree<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Crawford River, Hotspur</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
There is a tall shrub that grows in swamps and along watercourses in south-eastern Australia and in my lifetime it has become much less common. It's the Woolly Teatree <i>Leptospermum lanigerum</i>.<br />
<br />
The 'lanigerum' part of its name refers to the woolly (hairy) capsules and leaves. It has a a silvery appearance. In fact its other common name is Silky Teatree. The references call it 'common and widespread' and it is a plant used a lot in regeneration and restoration projects so in no way is it a threatened species but what is under threat is their favoured habitat. Farmers for generations have drained swamps and allowed stock to graze along river banks and in wet areas. My father was a dairy farmer and one paddock on our farm was a Woolly Teatree swamp when I was a child. Dad allowed his cows to graze the paddock and subsequent owners have as well and now there are no teatrees left.<br />
<br />
Some farmers are doing the right thing and fencing off swamps and creeksides. Organisations like Landcare, Greening Australia and Catchment Management Authorities are providing funding for fencing in some cases. But I fear it is too late for some populations of Woolly Teatree. In the photo, above, the swamps beside the Crawford River at Hotspur are full of water at the moment and the Woolly Teatrees must be loving getting their feet wet. But there won't be much regeneration because this particular patch (and others like it) is not fenced off and teatrees rely on a 'cool' fire to release the seeds from woody capsules.<br />

With a name like 'glanduligula' you would expect it to be covered in glandular hairs and so it is, except for the flowers. They are a very small plant of the heaths in southern Australia. The leaves form a very pretty flat basal rosette and if an insect lands on them it is trapped on the glands and its nutrients absorbed by the plant. The Scarlet Sundew is a carnivorous plant.</div>

The flower is a beautiful orange-red colour but because the plants are so small it can be overlooked. I like the styles in the centre of each flower of this sundew. There are only three, and they are divided at the tip.</div>

I don't know the origin of the word 'marianth but several sources suggest it means 'Mary's flower'. procumbens means 'lying on the ground' and Rhytidosporum means 'wrinkled seed'.<br />
<i><br /></i>
In the past it has been called a <i>Billardiera </i>and <i>Marianthus </i>and a<i> Pittosporum </i>but in 1862 von Mueller, the Government Botanist in Victoria, transferred it to the genus <i>Rhytidosporum</i>, but it remains in the Pittosporaceae family.<br />

The White Marianth thrives on poor soils of south-eastern Australia but can be easily overlooked and many people would be struggling to name it. The leaves are interesting because some, but not all, have three teeth on the apex.Boobookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01395043246338753023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9136691209248233009.post-358872806004839772017-09-09T06:01:00.000-07:002017-09-13T00:46:40.294-07:00Anglesea heath in early springIt's officially spring but the last week has seen driving rain, hail, snow in the Otways and strong winds. <br />
I am very familiar with the small shrub called Pink-bells (<i>Tetratheca ciliata</i>) because it is common in the forests of southern Victoria. Sometimes familiarity means you end up hardly noticing them even though they are a beautiful colour.<br />

They're very demure little flowers despite their colour because they always hang their heads.<br />
<br />
The majority are pink but I have found white ones occasionally and they are very beautiful as well.<br />

Pink-bells will start flowering very soon but this week I was in the Brisbane Ranges near Geelong I noticed and photographed a very dark pink plant that I thought was Pink-bells until I had a good look at it on the computer later.<br />
<br />
Turns out it was <i>Tetratheca bauerifolia </i>Heath Pink-bells, a plant I'd never seen before and didn't even know existed. It's natural habitat is stony hills so the Brisbane Ranges National Park is the perfect spot for it. It has the same shy habit as <i>T. ciliata </i>but the leaves are in whorls around the stem and it is a shorter plant. The flowers are a much darker pink.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xX9LKqeSs4I/Wa1PgHgWzyI/AAAAAAAARQg/ssxhJgmhQRIi1xlAZ9wEhqj_K67FeHA0QCLcBGAs/s1600/Tetratheca%2Bbauerifolia.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1197" data-original-width="1600" height="478" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xX9LKqeSs4I/Wa1PgHgWzyI/AAAAAAAARQg/ssxhJgmhQRIi1xlAZ9wEhqj_K67FeHA0QCLcBGAs/s640/Tetratheca%2Bbauerifolia.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>Tetratheca bauerifolia</i> Heath Pink-bells</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
And now I've found out that there is another beautiful Pink-bells plant in the Brisbane Ranges, <i>Tetratheca labillardierei</i> Glandular Pink-bells, so there's no way I'm going to ignore pink-bells when exploring the ranges again.Boobookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01395043246338753023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9136691209248233009.post-61863296482490791772017-09-02T20:45:00.000-07:002017-09-02T20:45:11.432-07:00Wattle DayOK, I know I've missed the official Wattle Day by 'that much' but yesterday I was in the Brisbane Ranges National Park and the wattles were flowering in massed beauty everywhere.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Golden Wattle <i>Acacia pycnantha</i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The most prolific is <i>Acacia pycnantha</i> Golden Wattle. It lined every road we travelled and is spread throughout the National Park. It's Australia's floral emblem.<br />
<br />
Another common wattle is the Myrtle Wattle <i>Acacia myrtifolia</i>. It has a shorter habit than the Golden Wattle and are often growing beneath them. One of the easiest way to identify them is to look at the leaves to see if there is a gland on one edge. In the photo below you can see this in the leaf at bottom left. I have to admit I'm just a little bit biased against Myrtle Wattle just because they look untidy. I know. I'm working on it and may need to consult a therapist.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>Acacia myrtifolia </i>Myrtle Wattle</td></tr>

There is another wattle I'm ambivalent about. <i>Acacia paradoxa</i> Hedge Wattle is very pretty but it is also very spiky and it can be a bit weedy. Hence the common name 'hedge' I suspect.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>Acacia paradoxa</i> Hedge Wattle</td></tr>

Another wattle I found was the Ploughshare Wattle <i>Acacia gunnii</i>. This wattle is a low shrub with pale flowers and the leaves are a really interesting shape.<br />

There are about 12 more species of wattles that have been recorded in the Brisbane Ranges. I'll have to go back for another look and try not to get distracted by orchids.<br />

<br /></div>
<div>
First I went to the Bert Boardman Picnic Reserve at Steiglitz, because the walking track behind it is usually interesting, and then to near the intersection of Switch Road and Ballan Road. The wattles were looking spectacular, <i>Acacia pycnantha </i>in particular, and there were several other interesting plants that I'll post about later but of course the orchids were flowering and they do tend to hog the limelight.</div>

The Small Gnat Orchids and Mayfly Orchids were prolific but very hard to see. It's easier to look for the leaves and then the flowers.</div>

<div>
I was very pleased to find one orchid in particular. I thought at first it was a Tall Greenhood but on closer inspection it was an Emerald-lip Greenhood. Apparently smaragdyna means emerald-lip in Ancient Greek and refers to the colour of the labellum.</div>

When I returned only a minute or two later the caterpillar was under attack by ants. It was wriggling rigorously and trying to escape but the ants were persistent and as I watched reinforcements arrived. It's amazing how quickly the message was passed along that there was a potential food source. As far as I could tell the caterpillar wasn't injured but maybe the ants knew more than I did.<br />
<br />
In the two photos below the caterpillar is still very active and so are the ants. Presumably the ants are nipping or stinging the caterpillar.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Big Ant at Poochera<br />
<i>Nothomyrmecia macrops</i> Dinosaur Ant</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Last week we were travelling towards Port Augusta after dark and needed to refuel so we stopped at Poochera. This Big Ant model is near the service station at Poochera but I've since read that the town has featured their ant in public art all over the place.<br />
<br />
Years ago I had read Edward O Wilson's book about ants, called <i>The Ants</i>, the only professional science work to have won a Pulitzer Prize - for general nonfiction - in 1991. In that book he tells the intriguing story about this famous ant.<br />
<br />
The Dinosaur Ant <i>Nothomyrmecia macrops</i> is the world's most primitive ant and was first collected in 1931. Unfortunately the label was not very helpful so entymologists from across the world looked for the ant north of Esperence in Western Australia for 46 years. In 1977 Robert Taylor and a team of scientists was driving across Australia to look again and stopped after dusk at Poochera in South Australia. Robert was taking a nature break in the scrub and found the ant. It is now thought the EP on the label of the original specimen referred to Eyre Peninsula not Esperence. The town is now a mecca for entymologists across the world.<br />
<br />
The ant is a beautiful golden colour and its stings are very painful for humans. Luckily only three people have been stung! The ants live in a colony underground and after dark the workers leave the nest and climb a nearby tree to look for insects. If an ant finds an insect it stings it to death and immediately takes it back underground. By dawn all the workers have returned to the nest and the entrance is obscured.<br />
<br />
So, if you ever visit Poochera please don't step on the dinosaurs.Boobookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01395043246338753023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9136691209248233009.post-33732503632795132262017-08-24T16:05:00.000-07:002017-08-29T17:14:43.025-07:00A post for NanTime to post an explanation for the pause in posts.<br />
<br />
Last week were staying with my cousin Diane and her husband Stewart at Capel (between Busselton and Bunbury), reminiscing about the fact that we were staying there 12 months ago when we heard that my father had died and consequently had a quick drive back home across the Nullarbor.<br />
<br />
We had a lovely day with Diane and Stewart exploring the coastline around the Margaret River area down to Augusta and next day packed up to leave for Albany and Esperence before heading back to Victoria mid-September. But it was not to be. We heard that morning that Phil's mother, Shirley Phelan, had died. So once again we had a quick drive back across the Nullarbor to Kerang.<br />
<br />
Yesterday was a beautiful day in northern Victoria and we held a small family ceremony, complete with bagpipes, at the Mitiamo Cemetery in the Terrick Terrick National Park, a cemetery in the middle of a beautiful forest of Murray Pines and eucalypts, native grasses, daisies and lillies. Then we had a service at the Kerang Uniting Church that was filled with friends and family from afar, united by our love and respect for a delightful 92-year-old lady. I've blogged about Shirley and the Alford family several times and you can find the links <a href="https://boobookbacktracks.blogspot.com.au/2017/04/london-school-of-music.html" target="_blank">here </a>and <a href="https://boobookbacktracks.blogspot.com.au/2015/01/sepia-saturday-shirleys-piano-lessons.html">here</a> and seach for in the side panel of the Backtracking blog.<br />
<br />
So, the photos on this post are from our visit to the Cape Leeuwin and Margaret River areas.<br />

This blog is a nature blog rather than a travel blog but I'll make an exception. We went to see the bell tower in Perth and discovered a new quay has been constructed right next door. Elizabeth Quay is quite delightful, small and interesting. There is a island with a playground, a water feature, a foot bridge, gardens and several retail outlets including cafes of course.<br />

We were amazed to see that the authorities (state or council) have allowed the development of hotels or multistoried units surrounding the quay. In the photos below you can see that building has started. In the future the views of the bell tower and from the bell tower and the city will be severely compromised but the view from some high-priced hotel room or unit will be stunning. Crazy. Money talks.</div>

PS We discovered that, as seniors, we could buy a $1.30 ticket for the ferry to South Perth from the quay that entitled us to travel back and forth for two hours. We only went across and back once.</div>

We stopped for a lunch break at a roadside stop on the Brand Highway, within the Moore River National Park. As usual I went for a little wander and discovered there was a powerline reserve nearby, a linear cleared area that was easy to walk along. I found numerous flowering plants and would think it is a marvellous spot at its peak flowering season. One of the best. Our lunch hour became two.</div>

The weather was a bit ordinary for tourists but this year in the west has been very dry so the farmers are happy and raintanks will fill up.<br />
<br />
The first coastal town we visited was Leeman. It has an attractive harbour with a small offshore island. that provide shelter for terns and cormorants. Because of recent storms the beach (and the pier) was covered in seaweed and we watched four pied oystercatchers fossicking for their lunch while we ate our lunch. I was also delighted to see an osprey nest on a tall pole nearby (complete with bird) and there appears to be manmade wire frame supporting the nest.<br />

We moved on further south to Green Head. It too promised white sandy beaches but the storms had washed up piles of seaweed and the wind was blowing strongly when we were there so we didn't do the Three Bays Walkway that looked interesting. Maybe I'm getting soft. Or older. Or lazy.<br />

On to Jurien Bay. On a good day we might have been tempted by one of the walks along the coast or a boat trip to see the resident Sea Lions but not this time.<br />
<br />
Cervantes is a lovely little town with a very pricey caravan park (that we didn't stay in), pricey because it's a base to see the Pinnacles Desert just to the south. We had intended going to the Pinnacles because we'd been there before and it is an amazing park that we would have liked to see again but it was raining buckets so we went to Lake Thetis instead. There's a walkway there and information boards about the thrombolites and stromatolites in the lake.<br />

It was gazetted in 1992 after a community backlash against plans to mine the area. It includes two mesas, Mount Lesueur and Mount Michaud, and supports over 900 species of plants. The park is named after Charles-Alexandre Lesueur a natural history artist aboard the <i>Naturaliste</i> on Hamelin's 1801 expedition.<br />
<br />
We visited the park about ten years ago and at that time I was overwhelmed by the stunning variety of plants and their amazing flowers. This time we were just a few weeks early to see the plants at their best but I still found a number of beauties. The shrubby heath (called Kwongan) is almost of uniform height.<br />
