Murphys Haystacks

I'd seen photos of Murphys Haystacks but I was surprised at the size and complexity of the pink granite rock formation. The geological name for this type of feature is inselberg. They were formed kilometres underground millions of years ago and then they were exposed and eroded.about 100 000 years ago, covered by sand dunes and then exposed again about 30 000 years ago.

It must have been an Aboriginal sacred site. I was most impressed that there was no graffiti.

An awesome site. At the moment it is on private land and appears to be well maintained (although the information boards need to be renewed) but I think the area should be reserved by the government.
